I am 68 years old and have trained in various martial arts since I was 11 years old. I stayed in many a few years and then moved on. I was looking for an art that was REALLY street usable and in the Mid-1990’s I found Combat Hapkido while on vacation in Vermont. I attended a seminar that day that said Combat Hapkido. I had taken Hapkido under several Korean Masters, one of which was the chosen successor to the art, Grandmaster Chin Il Chang.

I attended a seminar that day that said Combat Hapkido. I had taken Hapkido under several Korean Masters, one of which was the chosen successor to the art, Grandmaster Chin Il Chang, so I wanted to see what made Combat Hapkido different from traditional Hapkido. The seminar was taught by Grandmaster John Pellegrini, who is the founder of the system.
There were about 50 people at the seminar and it was a great seminar with great friendly people willing to help and share the art. Grandmaster Pellegrini put me in touch with then Master Alfred Medina and I liked his way of instruction and the students he had, many of which were street police officers looking for something that worked…WE FOUND IT…
I have stayed with Grandmaster Medina since then and have reached the rank of Grandmaster under his guidance. With Grandmaster Medina, Senior Master Brown and the other ranking Black Belt students and high ranking color belts you get to work hands on with senior students which is a plus not found in most other schools. Contact Grandmaster Medina and give it a try. YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY!

In 1997, I started learning traditional Hapkido, but as I got older, I realized I needed a more realistic self-defense/street-oriented curriculum. In 2005, I discovered Combat Hapkido with Alfred Medina. At the time, Master Medina (former NYPD sergeant) and his senior student, Jim Hartigan, 3rd dan (former U.S. Marine NCO), taught me realistic self-defense techniques needed for self-protection on the streets of NYC. No fluff: techniques they have used in there.

20 years later, I have reached master level in the system. Along with my previous knowledge of Sanda and Arnis, I've been able to work alongside Grandmaster Medina to update and fine tune the curriculum that is now taught to the students. It is well thought out and tested before passing the knowledge onto the students. So, if you're an adult looking for practical, realistic street self-defense with no high or acrobatic kicks, memorizing katas and hyungs, or impractical traditional weapons in a patient and fun environment, this is the school for you.
